Organization schema for online stores: a JSON-LD guide

Last updated:

Organization schema is a small block of structured data that tells machines who is behind your store. AI answer engines and search engines read it to confirm that your business is real, named consistently and reachable. A store without it leaves that to guesswork.

Why it matters for AI citation

When an assistant recommends a store, it needs to be confident about what that store is. Facts that are stated in machine-readable form are easier to extract than facts buried in page design. Organization markup gives a clear name, website, logo and contact route. It does not guarantee citations, but it removes an easy reason to skip you.

What a good block contains

  • name and url: your business name and main domain.
  • logo: a stable URL to your logo image.
  • contactPoint: a customer-service email or phone number and the languages you support.
  • address: your postal address, when you have one you can publish.
  • sameAs: links to your official profiles on other platforms.

You can use a more specific type such as LocalBusiness if you also have a physical shop.

Example

<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Organization",
  "name": "Your Store",
  "url": "https://your-store.com",
  "logo": "https://your-store.com/logo.png",
  "address": {
    "@type": "PostalAddress",
    "streetAddress": "12 Rue Exemple",
    "addressLocality": "Lyon",
    "postalCode": "69001",
    "addressCountry": "FR"
  },
  "contactPoint": {
    "@type": "ContactPoint",
    "contactType": "customer service",
    "email": "support@your-store.com",
    "availableLanguage": ["en", "fr"]
  },
  "sameAs": ["https://www.instagram.com/your-store"]
}
</script>

Common mistakes

  1. No Organization block at all. Many themes only output Product markup.
  2. Missing address or contactPoint. A bare name and URL says little about whether you can be reached.
  3. Inconsistent details. The name, address and email should match your contact page and legal notice.
  4. Invalid JSON. A trailing comma breaks the whole block. Validate it with a structured data testing tool after every change.

Where to add it

Most platforms let you edit the theme's head or a shared layout file, and some apps output the block for you. Add it once, site-wide, then check that it appears on the homepage.

Organization markup works best alongside a clear llms.txt file and crawler access: see allowing AI crawlers in robots.txt.

How Averifly helps

Averifly's GEO rules flag a store with no Organization structured data, and one whose Organization block lacks an address or contactPoint. See the full list in our rules, then run a free scan to check your own store.

Frequently asked questions

What is Organization schema?

It is JSON-LD markup that states who runs a website: business name, URL, logo, contact details and address. Search engines and AI systems read it to identify the business behind a site.

Where should I put Organization schema on my store?

Usually on the homepage or in a shared template, in a script tag of type application/ld+json. It describes the business, so it does not need to be repeated with different content on every page.

Do I need a physical address?

If you have one that customers can use, include it, since address and contact details help verify that a business is real. If you operate online only, include the contact details and the business address you are comfortable publishing.
