Black Friday checklist for online stores

Last updated:

Black Friday traffic doesn't forgive small problems. A cart button that doesn't respond on a phone, a price that only appears after a variant is selected, or a delivery page that still shows last year's dates each cost sales on the busiest days of the year. Check the path from product page to checkout before your code freeze, not during the week itself.

For scale: Adobe forecasts US online holiday sales of $275.1 billion for November and December 2026, with about $12.9 billion on Black Friday (November 27) and more than $15 billion on Cyber Monday.

1. Test the buying path on a phone

Adobe expects mobile to account for 57.4% of US online holiday sales, and around 63% on Thanksgiving. On a real phone, not a resized desktop browser:

  1. Open a best-seller from a search result or an ad link.
  2. Choose a variant (size, colour), then add to cart.
  3. Open the cart, change a quantity, apply a discount code.
  4. Go as far as payment.

Every step should work with one thumb and no zooming. See add-to-cart buttons and cart pages for what to look for.

2. Make prices and stock obvious

Shoppers comparing deals leave product pages that make them work for the information:

  • Show the price on every product page, including the discounted price and, where the law requires it, the reference price.
  • Show availability clearly, especially for low stock, and remove or hide sold-out products from promotions.
  • Check that promotion banners and codes match what the cart actually applies.

3. Check speed under promotion load

Promotions add scripts: countdown timers, pop-ups, extra tracking. Each one slows the product and cart pages. Remove tags you no longer use and test your slowest templates again. The Core Web Vitals guide lists the fixes that usually pay off.

4. Update delivery and returns information

Holiday buyers want to know whether the order arrives in time and whether a gift can be returned. Update your last order dates for delivery before the holidays, and say clearly how long the returns window lasts. The trust pages guide covers what shoppers look for.

5. Help AI shopping assistants describe your products

Adobe forecasts traffic from AI services to US retail sites to grow about 130% over the 2026 season. Assistants work best with clean product data: a clear title, a real description, price, availability and images, plus product structured data.

How Averifly helps

Averifly checks the add-to-cart control on product pages and the cart page, along with prices, availability, speed signals, trust pages and structured data, across a sample of your store. Run a free scan before your code freeze to see what to fix first.

Frequently asked questions

When should I finish my Black Friday checks?

Before your code freeze, usually two to three weeks before Black Friday. Fixes made during the peak week are risky, and shoppers who hit a broken cart rarely come back.

Should I test on desktop or mobile?

Mobile first. Adobe expects mobile to account for 57.4% of US online holiday sales in 2026, and around 63% on Thanksgiving.

Do AI assistants matter for Black Friday?

Increasingly. Adobe forecasts traffic from AI services to US retail sites to grow about 130% over the 2026 season. Clear product data and structured data help those assistants describe and link to your products.
